Troop 997 Adventures Journal

The troop has a monthly outdoor camping program year-round. We camp the third weekend of every month (rain, snow, sleet — we camp!), with the following exceptions:

Our monthly trips include a variety of experiences including tent camping, cabin camping, overnights on military vessels, and even beach camping. See our journal below of all the exciting adventures our scouts have enjoyed.

June 2008   Sheridan School Mountain Campus, Luray, VA - 15-mile canoe trip on the Shenandoah River and Sheridan orienteering course.
May 2008   Monticello, Charlottesville, VA - tour of Thomas Jeferson's home and plantation.
April 2008   Izaak Walton League, Centreville, VA - rifle shooting.
March 2008   Ferguson Farm, Ashburn, VA - Klondike Derby and new scout orientation
February 2008   Camp Snyder, Haymarket, VA - built and launched model rockets; star gazing
January 2008   Northern Virginia Lions Youth Camp, Boyce, Virginia - inside and outside games
December 2007   Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Maryland - 10 mile battlefield day hike
November 2007   Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Leesburg, Virginia - constructed and slept in wilderness survival shelters
October 2007   Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area, Waterlick, VA - Trail hike
September 2007   C&O Canal National Historic Park, Antietam Creek, MD - 30 mile bike hike on the C&O canal
August 2007   Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, Virginia - Fishing and swimming on the lake
July 2007   Blue Ridge Mountain Scout Reservation - Camp Ottari
June 2007   Rappahannock River Campground, Richardsville, Virginia - Canoe trip on the Rappahannock River and orienteering course at Prince William National Forest (followed by the traditional stop in Fredericksburg for Carl's frozen custard)
May 2007   National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Green Bank, West Virginia - toured the home of the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the world's largest Fully Steerable radio telescope
April 2007   Bull Run Regional Park, Centreville, Virginia - new scout orientation and hiked the Bluebell Trail
March 2007   Sadly, 10 inches of snow defeated us and cancelled our trip to Camp Rock Enon, Gore, Virginia
February 2007   Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship, Purcellville, Virginia - Goose Creek District Freeze-o-ree
January 2007   Great Falls National Park, virginia - day hike along the Potomac River
December 2006   Washington, DC - day hike - the "Monuments of Our Nation's Capital Trail", a ten mile trail that passes 55 monuments big and small
November 2006   Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Leesburg, Virginia - constructed a free-standing monkey bridge
October 2006   Big Meadows, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia - 10 mile hike to three waterfalls
September 2006   NPS Catoctin Mountain Park, Thurmont, Maryland - Troop Klondike Derby
August 2006   Baltimore Maritime Museum, Baltimore, Maryland - Tour of Fort McHenry; overnight on the retired U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Taney and tours of the retired U.S. Navy submarine Torsk and the Light Ship Chesapeake; Camden Yards for a Baltimore Orioles baseball game
